MICHAEL J. CAREY, MD
PHI RHO 1921
Michael Joseph Carey, MD, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, expired suddenly and unexpectedly June 12, 1959. He was seriously injured on May 22 when his automobile skidded and overturned.
Dr. Carey was serving his fourth term as a member of Phi Chi's Execute Trustees. He was one of Phi Chi’s representatives at the 22nd Medical Interfraternity Conference in Chicago, May 3, 1959. Honor came to him at this meeting by being elected the Conference's Secretary.
Dr. Carey's interest in and devotion to Phi Chi is well known by members throughout the nation. He was an ardent worker since his initiation by Phi Rho in 1926. As Alumni Secretary, he did his most efficient work as a chapter member, for while still a student he devoted most of his spare time to organizing and reactivating the alumni of Phi Rho Chapter.
He returned to Council Bluffs and affiliated with the teaching staff of Creighton University School of Medicine. He immediately associated himself with Chi Upsilon at Creighton University in Omaha. Because he knew full well the source of strength a strong alumni association can be to an active chapter, he did not rest until on Founders' Day, February 26, 1945, the Omaha Alumni Association was established. He was a charter member of this organization as well as a member of its Board of Directors and served as its Secretary/Treasurer.
Dr. Carey first became a member of the Phi Chi's “official family" in 1925 when he served as Phi Rho's delegate to the XXIV Grand Chapter Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. He was elected a member of the Executive Trustees. From that time on, he continued to serve in an official capacity, being reelected a member of the Executive Trustees in 1949 (XXXI GCC, Galveston-Houston, TX), Grand Presiding Junior, 1951 (XXXII GCC, New York); Grand Presiding Senior, 1953, (XXXIII GCC, Omaha, NE); member of the Executive Trustees, 1955 (XXXIV GCC, New Orleans, Louisiana), and again reelected member of the Executive Trustees, 1957, (XXXV GCC, Detroit, Ml).
Born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the son of Mary Wan Carey and James P. Carey. Dr. Carey received his grade school education in Council Bluffs; his high school work at Creighton Prep, Omaha, NE; his pre-medical training at Creighton University, Omaha NE.; his medical schooling at St. Louis University School of Medicine, St. Louis, graduating from there in June 1926 with degrees of B.S. and MD.
The Phi Chi Medical Fraternity has established, in Dr. Carey’s honor, the Michael J. Carey, MD Award, for outstanding service to the Fraternity by a senior. This is given by each Chapter and may be given each year.
